Children
Over the years, many of my clients have asked me to massage their child(ren) too. I have seen children with ADHD, hypersensitivity, autism spectrum disorders, JRA, cerebral palsy, tricotillamania, asthma, insomnia and depression with both very good and limited success.
Research studies on children and massage are growing. Most of the children I have seen have been on the autism spectrum. The existing body of research for autism spectrum disorders suggest a decrease in self-stimulating behaviors, better sleep patterns, improved receptivity to touch and less aggressive behavior. I am happy to see you and your child if you want to try massage for your child. Also, Kelly Hurley at the UMass Autism Resource Center is a caring resource if you are looking for more assistance with your child. http://www.autismconsortium.org/about-us/autism-resource-specialists.html
Additionally, the Barrett Family Wellness Center http://barrettfamilywellness.com/ specializes in children and provides comprehensive OT, PT and speech services. They are a local community (Northborough, MA) based outpatient center and they accept insurance.
Finally, Suzette Howland B.S., NCMT is a massage therapist who specializes particularly in children. Suzette is a dear colleague of mine and has been treating children for over 15 years. Among her extensive training, she has training in primitive and postural reflex development and specializes in Craniosacralfascia Therapy. She holds office hours at Barrett Family Wellness on Wednesdays while her main practice is located in Auburn, MA.
